The Kurfu river is perhaps the most essential body of water in the Mithril Sea, and is the lifeblood of the Naftu Empire. This massive river reaches the empire through the Ringing Lakes mountain region and the lush, fey-touched forests that are settles along its slopes. The river brings not only ample fresh water for drinking and irrigation, but it also carries with it nutrient-rich silt that it deposits in the flood plain.
The regular flooding of the Kurfu is critical to the power and survival of the Empire, and as such has a dramatic role on their culture. It’s influence is so significant that the “seasons” recognized in the Naftu calendar are aligned with the yearly flood cycle of the river. The flood season, Amas, occurs during the cooler, rainy part of the year where the river valley is innundated with fertile silt. The planting season, Mafa, aligns with the rising temperatures and longer, hotter days, and marks the planting and growing seasons. The final season, Pumu, when the river and its irrigation channels are at their weakest, marks the season for harvest and preperation.
